As a youth in  Mississippi he participated in and let Music for monthly county-wide Baptist Youth Meetings.   After High School he went to work in the oil fields where he was rapidly promoted to a position of  foreman. His work ethic and leadership abilities helped him to become successful in a short  period of time.

In 1965 he joined the U.S.Marines and went to Vietnam. He was meritoriously promoted 3  times and was honorably discharged as a sergeant (E-5) in 1969 at Yuma, Arizona. He knew by that  time that God had a plan for his life and he had been serving as Minister of Music for a Mission  Church. He had also begun attending college. In the Summer of 1970 he publicly confessed God's call  upon his life to be a "Preacher of The Gospel". That call has been confirmed numerous times throughout the intervening years.
